Join the Schmik Family!!!

Schmik is a temporary artist concept store showcasing the work of some of Brisbane’s leading artists, designers, and craft makers. Proudly sponsored by Multiplex Portside Wharf Pty Ltd, Schmik offers the public the opportunity to purchase distinctive, hand-crafted works of art, craft, and design direct from the makers and support the local contemporary visual arts community.

Schmik was the brain-child of Marisa Molina jeweler and sculptor, and Romy Willing, a photographer and arts manager. Marisa had, for a number of years, arranged for artists to get together for a one-night only exhibition and sale of their works over the Christmas period. In November 2007, Marisa approached Romy to become involved in such an event. During their search for a venue, Romy and Marisa were approached by Portside Wharf with an opportunity to use a retail space not just for one night, but on an on going basis. Hence, Schmik was born, and it has been a great success ever since it opened its doors on December 7 2007.

Marisa left Australia to expand her horizons and travel the world in February 2008, but has left her indelible mark of beauty on Schmik. Romy and Annie Burns, a fellow member of Schmik, are now the organizers of the concept store.

Artists are invited to be part of the Schmik collective based upon the artistic merit of their work and professionalism within their practice. The organizers also ensure that each style of artwork within the same medium is distinctively different, to ensure diversity within the stock.

Schmik is currently looking for more artists, designers, and craftmakers to join our little family! As the space is run by the artists, all artists involved must be able to man the store at least once in a fortnight, and each artist is expected to contribute to the store kitty, which covers costs for marketing and administration. There is no commission taken on sales, and the space is totally rent and utilities free. At this point, we only have the space until the end of May 2008, so if you are interested in being involved, please act quickly, and express your interest via email at schmikstore@yahoo.com.au. Please include a brief artist/artwork profile and a few low res images of your work.

Schmik prides itself on creating a family atmosphere amongst its members and each artist is expected to show respect to and support each other. Share the love.

Romy Willing

Though born in Australia, I spent much of my childhood in the American South. Like so many landscapes, it is at once both enchantingly beautiful and darkly sinister, everything richly steeped in a complex history, and yet there is a distinctive spirit to this place that has soaked into my bones like no other. Even now, so many miles and years away, it still stirs deeply inside me and I long for it. These images are a documentation of my journey to reconnect with this place and at the same time a memento of places I love like family but may never see again: images depicting both a return to home and a farewell.

Romy Willing holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Corcoran School Of Art, Washington DC. Romy worked as a photographer for the International Monetary Fund before returning to her native Australia in 1998. She continued to build her arts practice and established a successful commercial photography business.

Romy gained a Masters in Arts Management and Creative Enterprising from the Queensland University of Technology in 2005 and is currently the Industry Development Officer for Artworkers Alliance, developing and managing commercial, income-generating opportunities for Australian artists.

Romy is also the co-founder and current organiser of Schmik.

Janice Kuczkowski

Janice graduated in 2005 with a Bachelor of Visual Arts with first class Honours from Griffith University, Queensland College of Art, majoring in Intermedia. In 2006 she was the recipient of the Melville Haysom Memorial Art Scholarship administered by the Queensland Art Gallery. Also in 2006 Janice was awarded a Special Commendation in the Harries National Digital Art Awards, and exhibited in the International Digital Art Awards in Beijing. Janice has extensively exhibited her art nationally in both solo and group shows.

Using digital video Janice captures an authentic portrait of her subjects in their raw and unpolished form. Now working as a full time freelance video artist she is opening her portraiture up to surrealist dreamscapes with the hope of unleashing and unveiling an inner subconscious world rich with instinct and intuition.

You can find Janice's video work at Schmik, as well as beautiful framed still images and exquisite brooches based upon her video work.
